Posing as an Undercover CIA Agent to Conceal Countless Paid Sexual Escapades While Married

The truth of my family's story is so salacious at times, it sounds like a made-for-TV movie. But this wasn't a movie. It's about real life people being hurt. My deceased mother, Wendy Saltzburg, was an incredibly honest, loving, uplifting, educated and inspirational woman who had no clue she was being used and lied to by our father - the man she had devoted her entire adult life to.

Yet that's exactly what was happening - for decades. In fact, from the beginning. But at a certain point, she started to correctly suspect that her second husband Dr. Michael Saltzburg (my stepfather turned adoptive father) was cheating on her. She had supported the family, working full time as a school administrator plus extra cases on the side, from the beginning of their relationship. She was chronically exhausted, doing 100% of the domestic labor, child rearing me and my brother, working full time plus extra, dealing with the sudden loss of both of her parents, a near fatal miscarriage and the stillbirth of twins.

Our father Michael insisted he wanted biological children of his own. She loved children, but was worried about the future.  She had first been a single mother, then the primary breadwinner plus responsible for 100% of everything domestic, family and child-related. She was exhausted all the time.

After all of the exhausting responsibilities and loss she had experienced, she wasn't sure she could handle more children. Our stepfather Michael promised to help and support her. The help never arrived. He was focused on his career and she was left to deal with it all on her own, with the added burden of saving his medical practice from financial ruin. He finally was in a position to contribute and practically blew it! She had to save the day once again.

Michael had promised to help her if she had more children, but failed on every account. She was left with all of the additional work of two newborns; it was too much for her so at age 10, I was given the responsibility of extra child care. My brother Christopher, who was 15, when our brother Mark was born, also stepped up to try to help our mother.

Michael was never home, focused on his career. She decided to move the family from the Philadelphia suburbs to her hometown of Hollidaysburg, PA. She theorized his work would be less demanding and he would help her more with the two new infants.

The two late-in-life pregnancies, in the middle of losing both of her parents to cancer, combined with the stress of quitting her much loved career and switching to supporting Michael in his career, was a lot for her. She'd lost twins to stillbirth at 5 months and then became pregnant with our brother Mark right afterwards. I don't remember our father cooking a single meal or lifting a finger to help her during this difficult time. She did literally everything.

Ten years later she was diagnosed with a slow growing blood cancer, polycythemia vera, and I suspect she had started to become sick around that time. She was constantly exhausted and pale, whereas previously she had been much more energetic. In either case, the back-to-back pregnancies, plus the stress of caring for newborns was exhausting. She had trouble finding any childcare, so I remember walking with a baby carriage a mile away to pick up my infant brother Mark after school almost every day.

I'm sure, like any woman, she struggled with her body image after the strain on her body with these back-to-back pregnancies.  Eventually, Michael's increasingly suspicious absences and behavior led her to believe he was cheating on her. It must have been devastating given how vulnerable she was, having given up her career and financial security to bear more children later in life.

If the stakes are high enough and you need a good lie, expert manipulators go big. Tell a lie so outrageous no one could imagine it isn't true.

He had been caught and needed an escape. In order to explain away his suspicious behavior, he made up the cover-up of a lifetime.

Attracted to his incredible intelligence and talent, the CIA had recruited him while he was in college to become an undercover agent. 

My poor mother was so naive that he actually tricked her into feeling guilty for suspecting him. Not only was she wrong about him cheating, he convinced her he had been risking his life to serve his country! She later told me in the most heartfelt way what a hero he was, how exceptional he was.

For a cheater, it was genius. Now that he had gotten way with infidelity, he was emboldened. Any absence, secret communication, suspicious expense, etc. could easily be explained away by his secret service to his country.

He later disclosed his "secret CIA status" to our sister, who was tearfully afraid for his safety. It's truly amazing how these parasitic, manipulative men like my stepfather have no limits to their lack of moral boundaries.
